Robert E. Stein, MD
Dr. Stein graduated from the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in 1967. After a surgical residency at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City, and a two year tour of duty for the Army in Korea, Dr. Stein completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at Duke University Medical Center. During this time, he was awarded a United Cerebral Palsy Fellowship. Dr. Stein is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
Dr. Stein joined Tennessee Orthopaedic Alliance in 1976, pioneering arthroscopic surgery of the knee in Nashville. He specializes in adult reconstructive surgery with a strong emphasis knee surgery and on total joint replacement.
Dr. Stein served as Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at Baptist Hospital from 1985 to 1991 and is a past President of the Nashville Orthopaedic Society. He is also a Clinical Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Tennessee and serves as Clinical Coordinator for residency training at Baptist Hospital for the University of Tennessee Chattanooga Orthopaedic Residency Program. Dr. Stein also helped establish the Baptist Foot and Ankle Center and is a member of the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society. In 1991, Dr. Stein founded the Annual Baptist Hospital Total Joint Symposium and served as Program Chair for this premier regional educational seminar which attracted an international faculty. He is a member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons and serves on the medical staffs at Baptist Hospital, Centennial Medical Center and St. Thomas Hospital.
In 1991, Dr. Stein founded the Orthopaedics Overseas program to teach orthopaedic surgery in the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan and has served as Program Chairman since its inception. The program continues to send out a volunteer each month to help provide care and teaching in the small Himalayan Kingdom. What originally began as an orthopaedic program has now branched out to also include Physical Therapy, Nurse Anesthesia and most recently, Internal Medicine programs. In recognition of Dr. Stein's volunteerism through Orthopaedics Overseas, Dr. Stein received the 2008 Presidential Service Award, receiving the prestigious award at a luncheon during the annual American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons meeting on February 27, 2009, in Las Vegas, Nevada. The award recognizes a member who champions the mission of education in the healthcare sector, has made a significant contribution of time to the organization, and has inspired and encouraged others to get involved.
Dr. Stein and his wife have three children. An avid tennis player, he also teaches bread making and is a member of the Nashville Herb Society.

2008 National Presidential Orthopaedics Overseas Leadership Award, a national honor offered in recognition of volunterer service with Health Volunteers Oversars. The award is in recognition of the founding of a program which teaches orthopaedic surgery in Bhutan. Dr. Stein was instrumental in starting this program in 1991 and continues to serve on their Board of Directors.
