Allen F. Anderson, MD
Dr. Anderson is a 1976 graduate of the University of Tennessee College of Medicine. He completed a residency in orthopaedics at Vanderbilt University and is board certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and in general orthopaedics. He also has a certificate of added qualification for Sports Medicine.
A specialist in sports medicine with a keen interest in knee injury and ligament reconstruction, Dr. Anderson was influenced both by his years as an athlete and by Dr. Brant Lipscomb, Sr., a pioneer in sports medicine, whom he considers his mentor. Dr. Anderson has a thorough understanding of the unique needs of athletes with regard to treatment and prevention of injuries. Along with his area of expertise in Sports Medicine and Shoulder, Dr. Anderson works with adolescent ACL reconstruction and cartilage repair. He participated in a variety of youth athletics, including baseball, football, track and wrestling. He was captain of his high school football team and a TSSAA football AllStar. He was voted Most Athletic. During his college years, he participated in athletics at the University of Tennessee.
In an effort to continuously improve patient care, Dr. Anderson has conducted scientific research throughout his career. He has published 80 scientific articles in sports medicine books and various medical journals. One of his papers received the Hughston Award for the most outstanding scientific paper published in the American Journal of Sports Medicine. He has also had 20 scientific exhibits at National and International meetings, 76 national/international presentations and he has given 30 instructional course lectures to other orthopaedic surgeons. In recognition for his commitment to sports medicine Dr. Anderson was appointed Associate Editor of the American Journal of Sports Medicine and a member of the medical publishing Board of Trustees of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. He also served on the Board of Directors of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and he has previously served on the Board of Directors of the International Cartilage Repair Society. Dr. Anderson is Chairman of the International Knee Documentation Committee, which sets the standards that orthopaedic surgeons around the world use to evaluate the results of treatment. He is also chairman of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Research Scientific Advisory Committee, which also helps sports medicine physicians conduct scientific research in the United States. He is also chairman of the Knee Committee of the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. In 2010 he was honored by the Nashville Business Journal as a Health Care Hero and he was elected to the Canby Robinson Society Board of Directors, Vanderbilt University 2010-2013.
He has been a visiting professor at the University of Vermont and University of Cincinnati in 2011. In addition, he has held leadership positions in the Arthroscopy Association of North America and the Herodicus Society. Dr. Anderson was voted into the America’s Top Orthopaedists in 2012 for the eighth consecutive year by the Consumer’s Research Council of America, and to the Best Doctors in America by peers, Top Doctors and Patient’s Choice Recognition Award. At the 2012 American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons Meeting, he presented a video on Transepiphyseal, Physeal Sparing, ACL Reconstruction. He was also involved in a symposium on Pediatric Sports Medicine. At the AAOS Specialty Day in 2012 Dr. Anderson presented another symposium on ACL Reconstruction in Skeletally Immature Athletes.
As a result of his contributions to sports medicine, Dr. Anderson was selected as an examiner and test writer for both the general orthopaedic boards and the certificate of added qualification for sports medicine by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons, which provides Board Certification for orthopaedic surgeons in the United States.
Outside the work setting, Dr. Anderson enjoys spending time with his wife, Candy, and three sons, Brian, David and Chris. He also enjoys fly fishing and upland bird hunting.
